MacBook Air Review

The first big hit on the blog: Apple's latest notebook, the famous MacBook Air. Known and advertised as the world’s thinnest.

MacBook Air reviewed here has the following specifications:
  • Mac OS X v10.5.1 Leopard and Windows Vista Ultimate
  • Intel Core 2 Duo P7500 1.6GHz
  • 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
  • 80GB 4200rpm parallel ATA hard disk drive
  • 13.3" glossy widescreen TFT LED backlit display (1280 x 800)
  • Intel GMA X3100 graphics
  • iSight webcam
  • AirPort Extreme WiFi (IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n)
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • Micro DVI, USB 2.0 port (480Mbps), Audio out
  • Dimensions : 0.16-0.76", 12.8", 8.94" (H, W, D)
  • Weight: 3.0 pounds
  • 45W MagSafe power adapter with cable management system (6.5oz)
  • Integrated 37-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery
The design here is truly impressive when you compare its basic shape to a standard notebook. It is really unbelievably paper thin – its height is like a pencil eraser’s height. The simple design with only one visible port connection, makes a very good impression.

The palmrest and keyboard structure is formed from a block of aluminum with the internal cavity CNC machined. Not too flexible but no plastic crackling!
What is more: user replaceable batteries, nice port selection, or even a docking connector are all missing! The screen is very nice though, the colours are intense, and so is the backlight. Also there were no screen defects on this particular model. A minus that is easy to feel is the space on the keyboard in comparison to a normal keyboard. But once you get used to it, it gets comfortable. The touchpad has a few unique qualities. It is really large: 4.12" by 2.48" and has multitouch capabilities, resembling using iPod Touch or iPhone. It means you can spread your fingers apart to zoom in and out, circle your fingers around to rotate the objects etc.
It is hard to evaluate MacBook Air in general. On one hand you have a super thin, light design. On the other you do not have ports and you are given a permanent battery. There are some diver quirks recognized already, but these may be resolved soon. Also, it heathens truly intensively! Summarizing, though it is a very interesting notebook. It works with Windows Vista, it is really strong in spite of its design and the battery – though permanent – is pretty accurate.
